The F.A.S.T. Transfer Initiative

The F.A.S.T. Transfer Initiative (Research, Spin-offs, Scaling, Transfer) transforms promising research findings into market-ready innovations – quickly, effectively and with minimal red tape. As a key lever of the High-Tech Agenda Germany (HTAD), F.A.S.T. addresses one of the greatest structural challenges facing the German innovation system: the gap between excellent research and commercial application.

F.A.S.T. systematically matches research results with business needs, relying on a digital transfer marketplace supported by tailored mentoring services, IP expertise and streamlined funding procedures. In doing so, it brings together the concrete demand from industry with the supply from the academic sector.

A key element is the testing of competitive funding procedures: in this pilot project, the Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation (SPRIND) is implementing two programmes on key technologies of the HTAD, focusing on a new type of innovation funding that prioritises speed, impact and entrepreneurial thinking.

Pilot projects in quantum sensing and bioproduction under microgravity

As part of the pilot projects of the F.A.S.T. transfer initiative, SPRIND is focusing on two programmes in key technologies central to the High-Tech Agenda.

The Quantum Sensing Initiative, comprising the Funken ‘Quantum Sense Exploration’ and ‘Quantum Driven Intelligence’, aims to accelerate the transfer of quantum sensing and quantum-based intelligence into concrete applications. The focus is on the intelligent integration of high-precision quantum sensor data with existing data sources, AI systems and classical sensor systems to generate new insights, as well as the development of radically new quantum sensors and measurement principles. For the two initiatives, SPRIND is providing up to 300,000 euros and up to 600,000 euros per team respectively, depending on the programme, over a period of six and seven months respectively.

The current Funken also mark the launch of SPRIND’s long-term Quantum Sensing Initiative, which will include further measures and formats – ranging from additional Funken and challenges to individual investments and further support services.

In addition, Orbital Bioworks is launching an SPRIND Challenge designed to accelerate Europe’s entry into orbital bioproduction. Microgravity fundamentally alters fluid dynamics, crystal growth and biological processes, thereby enabling a higher standard of production. So far, the first commercial steps in this market have been taken primarily in the US; a European counterpart is currently lacking. Whoever develops the first economically viable applications under microgravity in the coming years will set the standards for a market that is only just emerging. SPRIND is providing up to 1,650,000 euros per team across two phases and is also organising access to microgravity platforms – including a parabolic flight campaign and an orbital mission to the LEO station VAST Haven-1. Applications for Orbital Bioworks are open until 3 July 2026.
