Roadmap Processes in Key Technologies are Gaining Momentum

Three more dialogues (“Partnerdialoge”) on the key technologies of the High-Tech Agenda Germany (HTAD) took place at the beginning of this week.
From the initial idea to the competitive product: as part of the HTAD, the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) brings together experts from across the entire innovation chain to take the German innovation system to a new level. In a dialogue between science, industry, the federal government and the states, roadmaps are being developed that contribute to the implementation of the goals of the High-Tech Agenda. From 19 to 22 January, three dialogues focused on technologies for climate-neutral mobility (mainly batteries), biotechnology and quantum technologies.

As part of the BMFTR's industry discussion on battery technology, an accompanying exchange took place on roadmaps in the field of technologies for climate-neutral mobility. The focus was on establishing and expanding competitive battery production and recycling in Germany, embedded in a European production network. This was the start of further dialogues with other ministries, industry, the federal states, associations and the scientific community.
The focus of the discussion was the competitiveness of battery technology in Germany and Europe, particularly from an industrial perspective. At present, Germany is too dependent on non-European countries, especially China, in areas such as materials and production. However, based on its strong and internationally recognised research landscape, Germany now has the opportunity to scale up and establish a European production network in this country. The first steps have been taken, including numerous well-established research locations in Germany, the Battery Cell Research Facility (FFB) in Münster and a strong network of science and industry in Germany and partner countries. The task now is to establish a European network for the battery production of tomorrow, a kind of ‘Airbus on Batteries,’ as the Minister described it in her speech at the Battery Forum the following day.

The Science Year 2026 ‘Medicine of the Future’ was officially launched on Tuesday, 20 January, at Futurium – a good start for the dialogue between stakeholders in the health sector. After the kick-off event, representatives from science, business, politics and civil society exchanged views on biotechnology and medical technology. They worked together on milestones for the roadmap. The aim was to sharpen technological foundations, highlight areas of interaction and identify opportunities for participation.

Work on the roadmap for quantum technologies is also progressing. On Wednesday, 21 January, the BMFTR met with selected representatives from research, industry, start-ups and associations in the quantum community. Representatives from the federal states were also involved. Compared to other technologies, quantum technologies are still largely immature. It is therefore important to strengthen the ecosystem at an early stage, prepare for transfer into application and promote technological sovereignty.
Additional partner dialogues in all key technologies and with a wide range of stakeholder groups are already being planned. An overview of the HTAD's goals and measures for the respective key technologies can be found here.
