The next step towards becoming a leading nation in quantum technology: Quantum Computing Competition

They will accelerate the development of medicines, optimise traffic management and take computing power to a whole new level: quantum computers. Therefore, our goal in the High-Tech Agenda for Germany (HTAD) is to realise at least two error-corrected quantum computers of the highest European standard by 2030. The new funding guideline „Missionsgetriebener Hardware-Wettbewerb: Fehlerkorrigiertes Quantencomputing mit Aufbau von Pilotlinien (Quantum Computing Competition)“ (Mission-Driven Hardware Competition: Error-Corrected Quantum Computing with the Establishment of Pilot Lines (Quantum Computing Competition) paves the way for the most advanced technologies currently available: superconductors, neutral atoms and ion traps.
Funding is provided for both research and development as well as for infrastructure for research and pilot production. The aim of the funding is to create the key technical prerequisite for error-corrected quantum computers and to significantly reduce the error susceptibility of quantum processors.
Eligible applicants include commercial enterprises, universities and non-university research institutions, as well as public-private partnerships (PPPs) formed by them.
Federal Minister for Technology Dorothee Bär describes this mission-oriented competition as the next step for our quantum companies (translated to English): “We are setting clear and measurable success criteria for this. In this way, we are ensuring technologically excellent quantum computers ‘Made in Germany’.”
