Towards Sustainable Agriculture with AI

How can artificial intelligence (AI) be used in food systems? This question will be addressed at KIDA KON, an annual conference on AI and data applications.

On 29 and 30 September, stakeholders from the KIDA network within the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) and other researchers will meet in Berlin to share methods, case studies, and research findings on AI in the agri-food sector. Agri-food research examines food 'from field to fork' by combining agriculture, food technology, economics and environmental sciences in order to make food systems more sustainable.

Increasing value creation through AI is a key objective of the High-Tech Agenda Germany (HTAD) and is also covered in the roadmap for artificial intelligence. The institutions and authorities participating in the KIDA consortium can play a part in this. These are specifically the research and advisory bodies belonging to the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL): the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety; the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment; the Deutsche Biomasseforschungszentrum (a federal institution that conducts applied research into the energetic and integrated material use of biomass); the Friedrich Loeffler Institut; the Julius Kühn Institut; the Max Rubner Institut; and the Thünen Institute.

At the conference, they will discuss the impact of AI on environmental and food sciences, digital innovations in agriculture, regulatory issues, data quality and interoperability, and computer vision, amongst other things.
